  1. Định nghĩa: Mạo từ là gì?

Mạo từ (article) a, an, the là một dạng từ hạn định và đứng trước danh từ. Được dùng để xác định một danh từ là cụ thể hay không cụ thể, chung chung.

  1. Phân loại:

Có 2 loại mạo từ:

Mạo từ bất định: a, an

Mạo từ xác định: the

Trường hợp không dùng mạo từ thì gọi là zero article.

Đứng trước danh từ chưa được đề cập trước đó hoặc người đọc, người nghe không biết.

Đứng trước danh từ đã đề cập trước đó hoặc người đọc, người nghe đã biết.

A: Do you live in a house?

B: No, actually, I live in an apartment.

3.1. Cách sử dụng mạo từ bất định a/an

A/An chỉ sử dụng với danh từ đếm được số ít. Không dùng cho danh từ số nhiều hoặc không đếm được.

E.g. I have an egg. (X: I have an information X: I have a computers. )

Dùng an trước danh từ bắt đầu bằng các nguyên âm a, e, i, o và những từ có phiên âm mở đầu là nguyên âm. Dùng a cho các trường hơp còn lại.

Khi lần đầu tiên đề cập đến một vật hoặc một người

E.g. I bought a new car yesterday.

E.g. I got attacked by an animal yesterday.

Khi nhắc đến công việc của một người

E.g. My mother is a teacher.

E.g. Lan want to become an astronaut in the future.

Đứng trước half để chỉ một nửa của cái gì đó. Tương tự với danh từ chỉ số lượng như a quarter, a third…

E.g. My mother bought a half kilo of oranges.

E.g. The tree are 1 metre and a half tall.

Đứng trước danh từ chỉ số đếm. Ngoài ra, để nói về lượng của một danh từ không đếm được, chúng ta có thể sử dụng a/an [đơn vị đo lường] of

E.g. Could I have a litre of milk, please? (X: Could I have a milk, please?)

3.2. Cách sử dụng mạo từ xác định the

The có thể dùng với cả danh từ số ít, số nhiều và không đếm được.

E.g. The rice we bought in the Thai shop is much better than the supermarket rice.

E.g. The weather was awful last summer.

Khi đề cập đến sự vật, hiện tượng đã thông báo trước đó hoặc người nghe và người nói đều biết

E.g. I don’t buy the newspaper these days. It’s free on the Internet.

Dùng the trước các danh từ chỉ sáng chế, nhạc cụ và loại hình văn hóa

E.g. The internet must be the greatest invention ever.

Dùng the trước tính từ để biến tính từ thành danh từ đại diện cho người sở hữu tính chất đó

E.g. I think the rich should pay more tax and that the poor shouldn’t pay any.

Dùng the trước tính từ so sánh nhất bổ nghĩa cho danh từ

E.g. She is the most intelligent student in my class.

Ngoài ra, trước những người, sự vật, hiện tượng chỉ có một cũng có thể dùng the: the mother, the Sun, the moon, the earth…

3.3. Các trường hợp không sử dụng mạo từ

E.g. We have to protect wild animals. (X: the wild animals, ở đây nhắc đến “động vật hoang dã nói chung”)

E.g. I go to bed at eleven most nights. (X: I go to the bed at eleven most nights.)

E.g.The police asked us to put our hands up. (X: The police asked us to put the hands up.)

E.g. She didn’t want to be in hospital but she was too ill to go home. (“Cô ấy không muốn ở trong viện”. Ở đây đề cập đến “hospital” là bệnh viện nói chung.)
